Academic Decathlon

Each year, the students in grades 6-8 are invited to become members of the AJHD – The Academic Jr. High Decathlon Team. This is an event that takes place on the first Saturday in March every year and over 1000 Catholic school students participate for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles event. For the 2015 event, we are celebrating 25 years of academic excellence!

Mrs. Ornelaz is our Head Coach and she is supported by teacher, parent and parish coaches. Each year, our student scores place them in the top 10 rankings of the individual subject scores. We are proud of our tradition of winning at the AJHD event every year. If you are interested in helping, please contact Mrs. Ornelaz or Mrs. Blair. GO KNIGHTS!

First Lego League Robotics Team – Incredibots

2018-2019 Season

What is FIRST LEGO League?

FIRST LEGO League is a robotics program for 9 to 14 year olds, which is designed to get children excited about science and technology — and teach them valuable employment and life skills. In FLL, teams learn both through what we do (the Robot Game and the Project) and how we do it (the FLL Core Values). Through the Robot Game teams build and program an autonomous robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology to score points in 2.5 minute matches on a themed playing field. Through the Project, teams explore an actual problem that today’s scientists and engineers are trying to solve, develop an innovative solution to that problem (either by creating something that doesn’t exist or building upon something that does), and share their findings with others. Throughout their work on the Robot Game and the Project, teams are guided by the FLL Core Values to build teamwork skills and make this a great experience for everyone involved.

The FLL Core Values are the cornerstones of the FLL program. They are among the fundamental elements that distinguish FLL from other programs of its kind. By embracing the Core Values, participants learn that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork.

The team will express the FIRST® philosophies of Gracious Professionalism® and Coopertition® through the Core Values:

  •  Discovery: We explore new skills and ideas.
  • Innovation: We use creativity and persistence to solve problems.
  • Impact: We apply what we learn to improve our world.
  • Inclusion: We respect each other and embrace our differences.
  • Teamwork: We are stronger when we work together.
  • Fun: We enjoy and celebrate what we do!

Junior Bots, 4th & 5th grade and Tiny Bots 2nd & 3rd grade

The Tiny Bots program will be a hands-on program designed to build interest in the areas of Science, and engineering in young children by exposing them to problem solving opportunities.  Student teams are presented with a problem that has two parts, designing a robot with Legos and programming the robot. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to use block computer programing with their robot to navigate a set of challenges.

In addition to the technical skills, students will develop their ability to work in teams, show sportsmanship, communicate clearly, and overcome challenges.  We will be following First Lego League Core Values:

  • We are a team.
  • We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors.
  • We know our coaches and mentors don’t have all the answers; we learn together.
  • We honor the spirit of friendly competition.
  • What we discover is more important than what we win.
  • We share our experiences with others.
  • We display Gracious Professionalism® and Cooperation® in everything we do.  Tiny Bot teams will be mentored by our Incredibot team

Junior Bot and Tiny Bot Teams will be mentored by our Incredibot Team.
